1 Quote. 1 Reflection. 1 Question.
“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”
From: Malala Yousafzai
Source: I am Malala
In October 2012 in Pakistan, a masked gunman boarded a school bus and asked, “Who is Malala?”After finding out who she was, he shot the left side of her head.
Malala Yousafzai was shot because she was publicly advocating for education rights for girls in her country. She woke up 10 days later in a hospital in England after being transferred there for medical treatment. She heard about the attack and discovered her story made headlines around the world.
2 years later she joined her family in their new home in the U.K. In this situation, most people would stop—rightfully so, who can blame them—but she didn't.
On her website, she writes "It was then I knew I had a choice: I could live a quiet life or I could make the most of this new life I had been given. I determined to continue my fight until every girl could go to school."
We should remember Malala and her story when facing situations that challenge our beliefs. We will hear lies, experience toxic HR policies, and see injustices in the streets. It is not enough to simply leave and turn a blind eye to these wrongdoings. We should voice our concerns publicly because that is where the change begins.
We will pay a price for doing so, but we pay either way—in silence or by speaking up. I prefer the latter because I would rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.
Whatever is forcing you to bite your tongue, re-fluff your pillow, or press your backspace key, is the very thing you need to speak up about.
Do this and you are the spark that lights the fire.
What is your biggest fear of speaking up?
